The match began in disaster for United when Lisandro Martínez inadvertently deflected an Odegaard cross into his own net after 29 minutes.

However, United responded with intent. Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a horror mistake by Martin Zubimendi to level before the break, and Patrick Dorgu thundered a stunning volley off the underside of the bar to put United 2-1 up early in the second half.

Arsenal looked to have rescued a point in the 84th minute when Mikel Merino bundled home from a corner, but their joy lasted only three minutes.

In the 87th minute, substitute Matheus Cunha picked up a pass from Kobbie Mainoo, veered infield, and unleashed a ferocious 25-yard curling strike into the bottom corner.

The victory catapults Manchester United into fourth place, leapfrogging Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea on goal difference and leaving Liverpool in sixth.

For Arsenal, the defeat cuts their lead at the top of the table to just four points, reigniting a title race that many thought was fading away.
