Super Eagles of Nigeria stay 6th in Africa: Drop in FIFA Ranking after Sao Tome and Principe thrashing

Despite a 6-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped in the latest FIFA Ranking to 40th in the world.

FIFA, the world’s top football governing body, has released its ranking for September.

The team that recently extended the contract of Head Coach Jose Peseiro are now 40th in the world.

The rankings mean that the Super Eagles stay sixth among countries under the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF).

The Super Eagles' drop in ranking comes after they dismantled the Parrots of Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 in their last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champions were previously ranked 39th globally but now dropped.

But despite the latest rankings, the Super Eagles of Nigeria stay behind only the Atlas Lions of Morocco, the Teranga Lions of Senegal, the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, the Desert Foxes of Algeria and Pharaohs of Egypt.

Reigning World Champions Argentina are top of the rankings, while France, Brazil, England, and Belgium wrap up the top five.

Croatia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, and Spain complete the top 10.

The Super Eagles will now take on the Falcons of Saudi Arabia in their next outing in October ahead of the 2024 AFCON.
