Nigerian legend Okocha ignores social media criticism to thank Kenyan President

The Premier League trophy was to be presented by Super Eagles of Nigeria legend Jay Jay Okocha in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

From September 1 to 2, 2023, the English Premier League trophy event was hosted, with the Carnivore Grounds serving as the event's high point and providing fans with world-class entertainment.

Okocha, who played for Bolton Wanderers, is regarded as one of the finest African players to ever compete in the English Premier League.

Fans were excited by the chance to meet one of Africa's best, making the former Nigerian International, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, the center of attention.

Okocha celebrates meeting Kenya's president

During his visit to Kenya, Okocha met with Kenyan President William Kipchirchir Samoei Ruto.

Okocha took to his official social media accounts to celebrate his meeting with the president.

Along with photos of his meeting was a message that said, "About yesterday, EPL trophy tour Nairobi 2023, a big thank you to his excellency the president of Kenya for an amazing hospitality."

Okocha under fire for comments in Kenya

At the event in Kenya, Okocha made comments that have riled up Nigerian football fans.

Okocha said that he prefers to watch European football than a live Nigerian football league because of the professionalism, presentation, and quality of the games.

Speaking to Kenyan-based, Capital Sports, he said, “I don’t think I’d watch the Nigerian league if there is a Premier League match on the television, that is if I am being honest, because the Premier League is more attractive.

“We need to go back to the drawing board and give ourselves time and put something together that will make our leagues attractive."

The statement by Okocha did not go down well with Nigerian football fans on social media.

They expressed their dissatisfaction stating that he was brought up through the Nigerian professional league system before heading to Europe for a glorious career.

Okocha, now retired is still involved in football as he plays in several exhibition games and participates in charity events.
