Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye has risen to the No. 1 position in the world in the 57 kg category with 49,000 points, according to the latest rankings by United World Wrestling.

This accomplishment comes on the heels of her exceptional performance at the ongoing African Games in Ghana, where she defeated Zineb Hassoune of Morocco with a pinfall to clinch gold in the 57kg category.

Adekuoroye's ascent to the top of the global rankings underscores her dominance and skill in the sport of wrestling.

Her victory not only secured a gold medal for Nigeria but also propelled her to the pinnacle of the wrestling world chart.

In the latest rankings, Moldova's Anastasia Nichita closely trails Adekuoroye in second position with 47,200 points, while Tsugumi Sakurai of Japan is in third position with 45,000 points.

Adekuoroye's win a motivation for Nigeria Wrestling Federation

The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, said he was elated at the wrestler’s feat, even though she had not competed as much as she would like to.

He confirmed that they had just finished the African championships in Alexandria.

“This ranking gives us added motivation to prepare adequately for the Olympics, We came with 15 athletes, won 9 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. We had 10 women, won 9 gold and 1 silver in the female style.

“We are now getting ready for the 2024 Oceania/Africa Olympic qualifiers, which start on March 22, Greco Roman on the 22nd, female wrestling on the 23rd, and freestyle on the 24th. Our goal is to qualify for about five or six slots,” he said.
