Born in Morges, Switzerland, Yann Sommer grew up in Basel, a city with a rich sporting heritage, also home to tennis legend Roger Federer, a close friend of Sommer's.

The passion for goalkeeping was almost a family inheritance; both his father and uncle played in the same position, profoundly influencing his early inclination towards the role.

From his very first football training session at the age of four, Sommer was drawn to the goalposts.

His formal youth career started with FC Herrliberg (1996–1997) and later Concordia Basel (1997–2003).

In 2003, at 16, he joined the prestigious youth setup of FC Basel. After progressing through Basel's U21 team, Sommer gained crucial early professional experience through loan spells.

He was first loaned to FC Vaduz, a Liechtenstein-based team playing in the Swiss Challenge League, from 2007 to 2009.

At Vaduz, he was instrumental in their promotion to the Swiss Super League and made his top-flight debut.

A subsequent loan spell at Grasshopper Club Zurich for the 2009–2010 season further honed his skills.

Upon returning to Basel, Sommer firmly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper.

Between 2010 and 2014, he made 170 appearances for the club, winning four consecutive Swiss Super League titles and a Swiss Cup, showcasing the consistency and leadership that would define his career.

This successful period at Basel prepared him for a move to a bigger European league.

In 2014, Sommer transferred to the German Bundesliga, joining Borussia Monchengladbach. He spent nearly nine years at Gladbach, becoming an iconic figure and eventually club captain, making 335 appearances in all competitions.

During his time there, he was renowned for his spectacular saves, including a Bundesliga record 19 saves in a single match against Bayern Munich in August 2022.

In January 2023, following a serious injury to Manuel Neuer, Bayern signed Sommer on a contract until June 2025.

Although his spell at Bayern was brief, lasting only half a season, he helped the team secure the Bundesliga title.

He then moved to Inter Milan in August 2023, seeking to be the undisputed number one goalkeeper after Andre Onana left for Manchester United.

At Inter, he quickly adapted, winning the Serie A title and an Italian Super Cup in his first season and playing a pivotal role in the Nerazzurri’s run to the 2025 Champions League final, notably producing a man-of-the-match performance in the semi-final second-leg win over Barcelona.

Outside the pitch, Sommer is known for his multifaceted personality, with interests in music (he plays the guitar and keyboard), cooking, architecture and photography.

Yann Sommer's international career with Switzerland was extensive and distinguished, spanning from youth levels to becoming the nation's most-capped goalkeeper before his retirement from international duty in August 2024.

He represented Switzerland at U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels, notably reaching the final of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2011.

Having made his senior debut for Die Nati in 2012, Sommer was a key member of the Swiss squad for three FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and three UEFA European Championships (2016, 2020, 2024).

His performances in these major tournaments were often pivotal. One of his most memorable moments came during UEFA Euro 2020 (played in 2021) when he saved Kylian Mbappe’s penalty in the shootout during the round of 16 match against world champions France, securing Switzerland's passage to the quarter-finals.

Throughout his international career, Sommer was lauded for his consistency and leadership.

He played a crucial role in Switzerland's qualification campaigns, including a remarkable run for the 2022 World Cup, where Switzerland topped their group ahead of Italy, with Sommer conceding just two goals.

He retired with 94 caps, leaving a significant legacy in Swiss football.

His decision to retire, announced via Instagram, marked the end of an era for Swiss goalkeeping, allowing him to focus on his club career.

His move to Borussia Monchengladbach saw him become a stalwart, amassing 335 appearances for the German club.

It was in the Bundesliga that he famously set a record for the most saves in a single match, making 19 stops against Bayern Munich in a 1-1 draw on 27 August 2022.

Why Yann Sommer left Bayern

Yann Sommer's departure from Bayern Munich to Inter Milan in August 2023 was a move driven by his desire for consistent first-team football.

He had joined Bayern in January 2023 as a replacement for Manuel Neuer, who had suffered a long-term injury.

While Sommer performed creditably and helped Bayern win the Bundesliga title, it was anticipated that Neuer would reclaim the starting spot upon his return to fitness.

Sommer, wanting to play as the number one goalkeeper in the long term, sought a new challenge where this role was guaranteed.

Bayern’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen stated that the club understood and respected Sommer's wish.

The Swiss goalkeeper himself later reflected on his time in Bavaria, acknowledging the intense spotlight and criticism he faced, though he maintained it was part of the job.
