What new Chelsea record did Cole Palmer set in wild victory against Manchester United?

The Blues’ star attacker netted his first Premier League hat-trick in the Blues’ rip-roaring triumph over Erik ten Hag’s men.

Chelsea were beneficiaries of a Cole Palmer hat-trick on Thursday night as they defeated Manchester United for the first time in the Premier League since 2017.

Chelsea 4-3 Manchester United

The Blues raced into an early two-goal lead following goals from Conor Gallagher and Palmer, but familiar defensive failings reared their ugly head as the Red Devils pegged the hosts back through Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes

The Argentine profited from Antony’s exquisite trivela assist in the 67th minute to put the Manchester giants 3-2 up, and Erik ten Hag’s men looked primed to extend their undefeated Premier League run against Chelsea with the game in its concluding minutes.

However, a clumsy Diogo Dalot foul on Noni Madueke saw another penalty awarded to Mauricio Pochettino’s men deep into second-half stoppage time. The young Englishman held his nerve to beat Andre Onana from 12 yards for the second time before scoring another in a trice after a Scott McTominay deflection to complete his hat-trick, thus sealing Chelsea’s late turnaround.

Palmer’s sets goal-time record for Chelsea

According to Opta, Palmer’s equaliser and match-winning strike have made it into the top 10 latest goal times since data collection began in 2006-07. The 21-year-old’s equaliser was timed at 99:18, and the match-winner was netted at 100:39.

While Palmer’s leveller ranks ninth overall for latest goals netted in Premier League history since 2006, the England international’s third against the Red Devils moved to third behind Dirk Kuyt — 101:48 for Liverpool against Arsenal in April 2011 — and Oli McBurnie — 102:07 for Sheffield United against West Ham in January 2024. It also became the latest winning goal scored in the English top division in the last 18 years.

Considering Chelsea alone, Palmer’s match-winner eclipsed Juan Mata’s goal against Norwich City in August 2011, timed at 100:03, previously the Blues’ latest goal in the Premier League. Mata’s goal against Norwich slipped to fifth in the Premier League after Thursday night’s events at Stamford Bridge.

What comes next for Chelsea?

Victory over the Red Devils took Chelsea into the top half of the division, with Pochettino’s men 10th in the table with 43 points, level with Brighton & Hove Albion, and six points adrift of Ten Hag’s team, having played one game fewer.

The Blues face Sheffield United on April 7 and Everton eight days later before their FA Cup semi-final meeting with Manchester City on April 20.
