Kelechi Iheanacho was a victim of poor officiating as his goal against Braga was erroneously ruled out.
Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho appeared to have had his goal erroneously ruled out by VAR in Celtic's Europa League defeat to Braga on Thursday night.
Iheanacho has taken to life at Celtic since signing as a free agent over the summer. He has three goal contributions in his first three matches, and while he struggled in front of goal in the last league game against Hibernian, he could have extended his run of goals or assists against Braga.
What happened
The Scottish giants were demoted to the Europa League after losing in the playoffs to Kazakhstani side Kairat Almaty. Iheanacho came off the bench in their first game of the competition to open the scoring against Red Star; however, Marko Arnautovic ensured spoils were shared.
He found the back of the net for the second consecutive UEL game, knocking a favourable deflection into his path with his head before finishing into a vacated goal.
However, upon VAR review, Romanian referee Radu Petrescu chopped off the goal. His reason? That Iheanacho had handled the ball just before scoring.
That does not seem to be the case from several highlight angles, however. Although Iheanacho's left hand was in touching distance from the ball during its elevation, he appeared to have successfully gotten it out of the way, allowing it to come into contact with his head.
Radu did not perceive it similarly and ruled out the goal. Celtic never recovered, conceding once more to lose 2-0. With only one point from a possible six, they currently sit in 28th place in the Europa League log, far from the qualification places.
