United suffered an early blow when Nemanja Vidic was stretchered off due to injury.

After the break, Wayne Rooney capitalised on a Ricardo Carvalho error to equalise for Manchester United.

However, their lead was short-lived. Michael Carrick handled the ball in the penalty area, allowing Ballack to score the winning goal from the penalty spot.

That was the first league penalty conceded by the Red Devils all season.

In a tense finish, Manchester United pushed for an equaliser. Ashley Cole and Andriy Shevchenko made goal-line clearances to deny Cristiano Ronaldo and Darren Fletcher, respectively, ensuring Chelsea claimed the vital three points.

The Blues, who possessed a poorer goal difference, knew that only a victory would realistically keep their title hopes alive, which they did by securing an important triumph.

However, the West London club ultimately fell short in the title race, ending the season on 85 points, two adrift of Sir Alex Ferguson's men, who had 87.

What’s next for Chelsea?

In the present day, Chelsea host Everton in Saturday’s Premier League action, aiming to improve their top-five prospects.
