Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen is expected to start the Champions League game against Atletico Madrid after returning from the AFCON.
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has returned to Galatasaray in time for their Champions League clash against Galatasaray after winning bronze with the Super Eagles at the AFCON.
The 27-year-old was an unused substitute for the third-place clash against Egypt. After the match, he rushed off to the airport, seemingly travel back to Turkey. However, he was spotted in Lagos at a party, sparking conversations about his priorities.
However, according to gzt.com, he has now returned to Istanbul and is expected to be named from the start for their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Osimhen supercharging Galatasaray's ambitions
Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League campaign this season has been defined by Osimhen’s potency and attacking output when fit, as the team have struggled in his absence due to injury.
Osimhen has been one of the tournament’s standout performers, scoring a hat-trick in a 3–0 win over Ajax in November to become the competition’s leading scorer with six goals at the time, including goals against Bodo/Glimt and Liverpool earlier in the league phase.
His presence has underpinned much of Galatasaray’s success, as they struggled to manage without him. When Osimhen was sidelined in late November after picking up a hamstring strain while on international duty with Nigeria, Galatasaray struggled, dropping points in matches like their Champions League defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise and domestic fixtures.
Additionally, in Osimhen’s absence, Galatasaray suffered a humbling 2-0 defeat to bitter rivals Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Super Cup Final, ending their five-match unbeaten streak against their cross-city nemesis.
Cim-Bom need points from their remaining two league phase games in the UCL, starting from Wednesday’s clash against Atletico. They currently occupy a playoff spot (18th), with a mathematical chance of finishing in the top eight, which guarantees a place in the next round. While that is unlikely, given the number of teams with more advantageous positions on the log, they will look to collect as many points from the games against Atlético and Monaco to ensure they do not drop below 24th, and Osimhen’s presence is crucial.
