Angel Gomes has joined Mason Greenwood in Marseille

Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has officially completed a move to Ligue 1 giants Olympique de Marseille, signing a three-year deal that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2028.

The 24-year-old departs Lille after five seasons and will link up with ex-United teammate Mason Greenwood at the Stade Vélodrome.

The move ends weeks of speculation surrounding Gomes’ future, with Premier League outfits Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham reportedly expressing interest.

However, the England international opted to continue his career in France, under the guidance of new Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi.

What Gomes said

Gomes said during his unveiling on Friday that the club is massive and incredible.

"France has become like a second home to me. Marseille is a massive club with incredible fans and big ambitions. The opportunity to work with Coach De Zerbi and reunite with Mason [Greenwood] made this a very exciting move for me," he said.

Gomes first left Manchester United in 2020 after rising through the club’s academy. He joined Lille on a free transfer and was immediately loaned to Portuguese side Boavista for the 2020–21 season. Upon returning to Lille, the versatile midfielder gradually carved out a significant role, appearing in 134 matches, scoring 10 goals and providing 19 assists across all competitions.

Despite an injury-hit 2024–25 season that limited him to 20 appearances and only 10 starts in Ligue 1, Gomes remained an influential figure when fit.

"It was a tough season with injuries, but I’ve learned a lot and grown stronger. Now, I’m looking forward to a fresh start and giving everything for this club," Gomes added.

Gomes to linkup with Greenwood

At Marseille, Gomes will link up with former teammate Mason Greenwood, who joined the club last summer. The pair came through Manchester United’s youth ranks and were tipped as future stars before taking different paths in their careers.

"Angel is a quality player and a great person. We’ve kept in touch over the years, and I’m buzzing to have him here. I think the fans are going to love what he brings to the team," Greenwood told club media.

Marseille are gearing up for a new era under Roberto De Zerbi, who is widely known for his dynamic attacking style. Gomes is expected to play a pivotal role in the Italian’s midfield setup.

Marseille will begin their Ligue 1 campaign at home against Rennes on August 17, with fans eagerly awaiting the new-look side’s debut.
