Some shocking revelations have surfaced, claiming that Mo Salah was this close to leaving Liverpool to join a Saudi Pro League club because of Jurgen Klopp.

A former Saudi Pro League coach has stated that Mo Salah was close to swapping Merseyside for the Middle East because he was unhappy with Jurgen Klopp.

The Egyptian winger’s contract has been a subject of concern for Liverpool in recent years, and with a new deal yet to be agreed upon, former Al Fateh Sports Club coach Slaven Bilic has now lifted the lid on how Salah would have joined the Saudi Pro League, if not for the decision of Klopp to quit Liverpool last summer.

Jurgen Klopp was Liverpool’s manager between 2015 and 2024. Under the German tactician, Mo Salah won everything possible in club football - the UEFA Champions League(18/19), Premier League(19/20), FA Cup (21/22), Carabao Cup (21/22, 23/24), UEFA Super Cup (19/20), and FIFA Club World Cup (19/20).

However, it was shocking news when Klopp announced in January 2024 that he was leaving his position as Liverpool boss. Fans of the Merseyside club were gutted, but there was sheer delight with the opposition, who finally heaved a sigh of relief.

Mo Salah’s most productive spell in his career came under the former Borussia Dortmund coach, where he bagged 211 goals and 88 assists in 349 games. So it was a bit surprising when ex-West Ham coach Slaven Bilic revealed that the Egyptian winger was happy under Klopp.

What Slaven Bilic said

Slaven Bilic, who had previously managed clubs like Watford and West Brom in England, praised Mo Salah, calling him the best striker and winger in the Premier League.

“Mohamed Salah is the best striker in the Premier League, he is the best winger in the Premier League and he is the best number 10 in the Premier League,” Bilic said.

The former Croatia boss, who also had spells in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad and recently with Al Fateh, said the arrival of Arne Slot at Liverpool was the game-changer that stopped Salah from moving to the Gulf.

Bilic said: “There has definitely been a change this season under Arne Slot as, having been in Saudi Arabia last year, I know he wasn’t happy under Jurgen Klopp and we were expecting him to move.

“The whole of Saudi was ready for him - and he would have been the star of the league. As far as we were all concerned, it was done and Mo Salah was going to join Al-Ittihad.

“I wasn’t surprised he didn’t move, though. He knows the move is there for him when he wants to leave Liverpool. It’s not a one-year take it or leave it project in Saudi.”

Mo Salah under Arne Slot

Mo Salah has been Liverpool’s best player this season; the Egyptian king has been a shining light for the Reds since joining from Roma in 2017 for €35.00m.

Since Dutch manager Slot took over in the summer of 2024, he has injected fresh impetus into his Liverpool side, with Mo Salah, one of the beneficiaries, being in extraordinary form, scoring 25 league goals plus 17 assists in 28 games.

The Reds are 13 points clear of Arsenal in the race for the Premier League and won all but one of their 8 games in the new Champions League format

A heroic performance from Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson and a cool finish from Harvey Elliot with what was his first touch of the match, after replacing Mo Salah late on, gave Liverpool an early lead in their R16 tie against PSG.

Liverpool will host PSG at Anfield on Tuesday, March 11, for the return leg but face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.
