The first leg of the double header friendly has been called off

The international friendly between the Nigeria women's national team, the Super Falcons, and their Cameroonian counterparts, the Indomitable Lionesses, scheduled for Saturday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, has been called off.

Nigeria's Super Falcons are Africa's best.

The cancellation stems from logistical issues and the late arrival of the Cameroonian delegation.

The Lionesses' tardy arrival in Ikenne late on Friday made it impractical to proceed with the fixture as planned.

This unforeseen delay, attributed to "travel hitches" en route from Cameroon, severely impacted the Lionesses' recovery schedule and the necessary pre-match protocols for an international encounter.

The initial friendly was set to mark the Super Falcons' return to action for the first time since their narrow defeat to France in November 2024.

However, the abrupt change in plans means only one leg of the doubleheader will now be played.

The second leg, originally slated for Tuesday, June 3, at the MKO Abiola Arena in Abeokuta, has been brought forward by a day and will now take place on Monday, June 2, at the same venue.

For the Super Falcons, this friendly serves as a vital component of their preparations for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Africa's most decorated women's team, Nigeria boasts a record nine WAFCON titles and has consistently reached every semi-final since the tournament's inception in 1991.

The 2024 WAFCON, postponed from last year, is scheduled to run from July 5 to 26, 2025, in Morocco, with Nigeria drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.
