Akpom wins PFA Championship Player of the Year

Akpom was superb in the 2022/23 EFL Championship season, scoring 28 goals for Middlesbrough and finishing as the league’s top scorer as Boro finished fourth in the league.

Although Middlesbrough were unable to reach the Premier League after losing in the playoffs, Akpom’s impressive performances over the season still earned him the EFL Championship Player of the Year as well as the club’s Player of the Season.

The former Arsenal academy star was also named to the EFL Championship Team of the Season and the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Akpom joins Ajax looking to earn Super Eagles call up

Akpom left Middlesbrough in the summer to join Dutch giants Ajax in a €14.3 million deal, including bonuses to help de Joden reclaim the Eredivisie title.

The forward is yet to make a senior international appearance for either England or Nigeria but has indicated an interest in representing the Super Eagles if invited.

Given the depth of attacking talent currently in the Super Eagles team, Akpom has his work cut out if he is ever going to represent Nigeria, but a move to Ajax and further personal accolades should help him win a place in the team in future.
