Former Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen has claimed Arsenal may need to sign a new striker next summer.

Viktor Gyokeres arrived at the Emirates in a high-profile £64 million transfer from Sporting CP last July, following a prolific spell where he netted 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese club.

However, the Sweden international has found the net just seven times in 24 games for the Gunners.

Five of those goals came against Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Burnley, and Everton, with the other two scored in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid.

The striker's recent form has come under scrutiny, particularly after he failed to register a shot on target during Arsenal's goalless draw with Liverpool on Thursday. Gyokeres has now scored only once in his last ten matches.

Michael Owen tells Arteta to replace average Gyokeres

"We were on the pitch four or five minutes before kick-off, and we were discussing him [Gyokeres], and I said then, ‘the jury is out’, and I still feel the same way at the moment," Owen told Premier League Productions.

"They wanted him to put the finishing touches on this team, and they’re probably still searching for that person," Owen explained.

"If the Champions League final was tomorrow night, I’m not sure he would start."

Owen acknowledged that Arsenal will persist with their expensive signing but questioned his impact in crucial fixtures.

"Against Burnley, against Nottingham Forest, against Everton, whoever it might be, he probably is going to score a lot of goals," Owen conceded. "But to win these games [against Liverpool], you need a bit of class, and that’s just where he lacks."

The former Ballon d'Or winner sympathised with manager Mikel Arteta, noting the global scarcity of elite centre-forwards.

"I feel sorry for Mikel Arteta in a way," he continued. "He knows that was a problem, and you search around the world with a big pot of money to spend, what are the options? It’s not an easy position to fill."

Owen concluded by reiterating his doubts: "The bottom line is the jury is out. I’m not sure he [Gyokeres] is the long-term answer."
