Portugal 2-2 Hungary: Ronaldo's brace ruined by late Szoboszlai goal
Portugal and Hungary battled to a dramatic 2-2 draw in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Alvalade Stadium.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was the hero for Hungary as the avoided defeat despite a brace by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo's brace ruined
The game began with Hungary taking a shock lead in the 8th minute, thanks to Szoboszlai’s set-piece that found Attila Szalai, who gave Hungary an early advantage.
Portugal responded with their captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, stepping up to equalize assisted by Nelson Semedo in the 22nd minute.
The 40-year-old Al-Nassr forward wasn’t done yet as Portugal would go in front through his second goal, assisted by Nuno Mendes in the 45th minute.
Portugal went to halftime break with a 2-1 lead thanks to Ronaldo.
The brace took his career goal count to an astonishing 948 as he surpassed Iran's Ali Daei and Mexico's Javier Hernández to become the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
In the second half, Ronaldo’s night came to an end as he was substituted for Goncalo Ramos in the 78th minute.
However, the final moments belonged to Dominik Szoboszlai who was on the end of a ball by Daniel Lukacs to equalize for Hungary.
