Nigerian Dorgu's first Man United goal secures first back-to-back wins vs PL teams for Amorim
Young Nigerian defender Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu stole the show as Manchester United secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League Summer Series held early Thursday morning at Soldier Field, Chicago.
This win was Manchester United's first back-to-back victories against Premier League teams under manager Ruben Amorim, further solidifying their standing in the friendly competition.
Dorgu, 20, celebrated his first goal for Manchester United, demonstrating his growing influence on the team’s attacking play, something positive for him to celebrate, especially after setting an unwanted record last season.
The Danish-Nigerian star who was forced to adopt his local name by his Igbo parents was decisive in the opening half, first providing a precise assist to fellow Dane Rasmus Hojlund with a pinpoint cross that opened the scoring in the 8th minute.
Dorgu then doubled the lead in the 25th minute with a strong finish, outmaneuvering defenders and calmly converting after Mason Mount’s quick free-kick, putting Amorim’s side comfortably in control.
The attacking momentum continued in the second half as Ivorian winger Amad maintained the African influence when he scored in the 53rd minute, followed by a goal from Ethan Williams in the 72nd minute.
Bournemouth's only goal came from an own goal by Matthijs de Ligt in the 88th minute, deflecting a cross from David Brooks.
Man United's official website praised Dorgu for his ability to stretch play on the flank, calling it a key element of the team's attacking output.
Speaking to MUTV after the match, Dorgu expressed satisfaction with his contribution: "It felt good. It was good to help the team out there and it was good to get the win, we just keep improving and look forward to the season".
With this win, Ruben Amorim’s Man United side remains unbeaten in the friendly series in the United States and will need only a point against Everton on Sunday in Atlanta to secure the Premier League Summer Series trophy.
