Jose Mourinho is closing in on a sensational return to Benfica after Bruno Lage was sacked immediately following a humiliating Champions League defeat to Qarabag.

Portuguese giants Benfica are closing in on a sensational managerial return for Jose Mourinho following the sacking of Bruno Lage after a humiliating Champions League defeat to Qarabag FK.

The Portuguese Liga giants suffered a shocking 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag in their Champions League opener on Tuesday, having initially taken a two-goal lead.

This stunning collapse in front of the home fans led club officials to lose faith in Lage, who was swiftly relieved of his coaching duties.

The decision to sack him came as a shock but underlines Benfica’s urgency to salvage their season and restore credibility in Europe.

Trusted transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Benfica are in advanced talks with Mourinho to become the next head coach.

Mourinho, eager to return to managing without delay after he was fired by Fenerbahce, is open to the move, and the agreement is expected to be concluded soon.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Roma manager would immediately become the club’s top candidate to steer Benfica back to winning ways.

Mourinho’s departure from Fenerbahce earlier this year came after a similarly disappointing Champions League run against the same club, Benfica.

The Turkish Super Lig side failed to qualify for the group stage of Europe’s premier club competition, leading to Mourinho’s dismissal and adding to a string of setbacks in his recent coaching career.

This fresh opportunity at Benfica signals a chance for the “Special One” to reassert his credentials on Europe’s biggest stage.

Lage's Benfica sacked Mourinho as Fenerbahce's manager.

Benfica supporters will hope Mourinho’s proven track record in high-pressure environments will bring stability and success following the abrupt departure of Lage.

With talks advancing rapidly, the Portuguese club appears ready to back Mourinho in a bid to reverse their poor continental form and mount a strong challenge in both domestic and European competitions.

The next few days will be decisive as Benfica look to finalise the deal and announce the return Mourinho for a second stint after his first in the 2000.
