The Red Devils' woes continue as Kobbie Mainoo has expressed his desire to leave Old Trafford
Manchester United are facing fresh turmoil as academy star Kobbie Mainoo has asked to leave on loan, adding to the mounting frustration around Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old midfielder’s request comes just as United confirmed Alejandro Garnacho’s £40m move to Chelsea.
Mainoo pushes for loan move amid growing frustration
Mainoo, a product of United’s youth system since the age of six, informed the club that he wanted a loan before Monday’s transfer deadline in order to secure regular football.
Having made his first appearance of the season in the humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, he is desperate for more minutes and is unwilling to commit to a permanent exit.
Despite interest from ten clubs across Europe, including both Madrid giants and Napoli, Manchester United have told him to stay and fight for his place.
Manager Ruben Amorim has made it clear that Mainoo is competing directly with captain Bruno Fernandes for a midfield role.
That competition, along with slow contract negotiations, has left the England international concerned about his future and his national team chances, especially after being overlooked by Thomas Tuchel in recent England squads.
Manchester United balancing PSR rules with player discontent
Mainoo’s request came on the same day United sealed Garnacho’s departure to Chelsea in a deal worth £40m plus a 10 per cent sell-on clause, making him the club’s fourth most expensive sale.
Garnacho had forced the move after being frozen out of Amorim’s plans, and his exit highlights the club’s growing reliance on academy products for profit under PSR rules.
Manchester United, who have already spent over £210m on new arrivals this summer, are also in talks to offload Rasmus Hojlund and Antony.
But the prospect of losing both Garnacho and potentially Mainoo in quick succession has left supporters worried about the club’s long-term direction.
