Manchester United might use a pay-off to compel their club captain Harry Maguire to leave with two years left on his contract.

The English defender has struggled to get into Erik Ten Hag’s team and has been disappointing when called upon to play.

Maguire has only made 16 appearances in 61 games since Ten Hag became United’s manager this season.

The United captain has fallen down the pecking order with the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw preferred being selected ahead of him in the centre of defence.

Maguire still has two years remaining on his contract but the club is willing to terminate his contract and pay him off.

Maguire out of favour at United

Harry Maguire could receive up to ₦5 billion from Manchester United to leave the team this summer after the centre-back suffered a massive decline in performance.

The Daily Mail claims that if he leaves in the summer, prospective teams will only be ready to pay him half of that salary, thus the club must give him a ₦5 billion pay-off to make up for his lost earnings elsewhere.

According to the report, Manchester United is actually prepared to provide the England international with a pay-off in order to make room for him in their rosters and raise money.

Maguire to discuss his future with Ten Hag

According to ESPN, Maguire will meet with Ten Hag to discuss his options after the FA Cup final with Manchester City.

Ten Hag has made it known that he wants Maguire to remain, emphasising that it is ultimately up to his player to decide if he wants to stay or go.

Maguire will be looking to get more playing time after he was warned by England manager Gareth Southgate last week that he is at risk of being left out of the squad.

The 30-year-old will seek a new challenge after being frozen out of the squad and will discuss his future with Ten Hag.
