The Cityzens have done Chelsea a favour by pruning the number of first-team goalkeepers currently at the club down to eight
Manchester City have signed veteran goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea. The 33-year-old has inked a one-year deal and will join Pep Guardiola’s squad ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
With Chelsea currently stacked with nine first-team goalkeepers, Bettinelli’s departure clears a spot, while Manchester City gain an experienced backup for Ederson and Stefan Ortega Moreno.
A new challenge for Bettinelli
Bettinelli, who started his career at Fulham before joining Chelsea, expressed his excitement about the move, saying, “It’s an honour to sign for City.

“I have admired from afar what this Club have achieved since Pep Guardiola arrived, and now I am excited to be a part of building on that success.
“I can’t wait to work with Guardiola, Xabi Mancisidor and the excellent goalkeepers already here and see their methods up close.
With Manchester City competing on multiple fronts, Bettinelli’s role, whether as a mentor, training asset, or emergency option, could prove valuable.
Manchester City bolster goalkeeping depth
After losing former third-choice goalkeeper, veteran Scott Carson, Manchester City have done well to sign Bettinelli, who is of the same ilk as the former Liverpool man.
Director of Football Hugo Viana welcomed the signing, praising Bettinelli’s Premier League experience, saying, “He strengthens our goalkeeping unit and brings the right mentality.”
While Ederson remains the undisputed No. 1, Bettinelli’s arrival ensures City have another reliable option in a demanding season.
For now, Bettinelli will focus on settling in, and maybe adding more trophies to his and Manchester City’s trophy cabinet.
