Manchester City ended their run of tough results with a comfortable 2-0 win over bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
After a bruising start to 2026 that saw the defending champions fail to win a single league match, it was the clinical impact of Manchester City’s African contingent that restored order and put the pressure back on league leaders Arsenal.
Manchester City make light work of Wolves to keep title hopes alive
Pep Guardiola needed a response after City's shock 3-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League, and his day started in excellent fashion as former Wolves man Matheus Nunes whipped in a ball for Omar Marmoush to prod home inside six minutes.
Marmoush came within inches of doubling City’s lead, striking the post in the 35th minute before VAR helped clear a potential penalty award for a Yerson Mosquera handball in the build-up.
With halftime approaching, away fans would have been content to go into the break just one goal behind, but it was not to be, as Antoine Semenyo netted his third strike in four since joining City, sweeping a low shot beyond the reach of José Sá.
With a two-goal mountain to climb, Wolves pushed hard to find a way back into the match. They nearly pulled one back when Andre fired a powerful free-kick just over the crossbar.
City struggled to create clear chances in the second half, but nearly settled the game 12 minutes from time when Antoine Semenyo unleashed a ferocious strike that rattled the crossbar. Guardiola's side ultimately held on for a crucial win.
