Liam Delap has commented on Nicolas Jackson’s sending-off in Chelsea’s Club World Cup defeat by Flamengo.

Liam Delap has said his piece on Nicolas Jackson's red card in Chelsea's 3-1 defeat against Flamengo at the Club World Cup.

The forward was sent off just four minutes after being substituted into the game during the Premier League club’s defeat, despite having played well for an hour against Los Angeles FC.

Chelsea was already behind 2-1 when Jackson received his red card, and Flamengo subsequently scored a third goal, leaving Maresca’s team to fight for second place in Group D.

The 24-year-old has openly apologised for his behaviour, expressing disappointment in himself and claiming the challenge was not deliberate.

Delap on Jackson dismissal

While Delap offered a degree of defence for his teammate's intense approach, he is undoubtedly aware of the opportunity to impress Maresca during Jackson’s suspension.

“Everyone plays close to the edge a little bit,” Delap said. “You have to be aggressive, on the front foot.”

Furthermore, the striker ignored suggestions that Chelsea’s No. 9 shirt is "cursed," expressing his detachment from such speculation.

“I’m not that type of person,” continued Delap. “It’s something that people speculate about but it doesn’t mean anything to me.”

What’s next for Chelsea?

Delap is expected to play for Chelsea against Esperance on Tuesday, and they need a draw to avoid exiting the Club World Cup.
