Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni discussed Mohamed Salah's struggles at Liverpool.
Legendary Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has attempted to analyse Mohamed Salah’s recent struggles at Liverpool, explaining that the physical nature of the Premier League makes it tougher on players of advanced ages.
Salah's struggles
The 33-year-old had the best season of his career last term, scoring 29 goals and providing 11 assists to lead the Reds to their second Premier League title.
Hence, Liverpool handed him a contract renewal despite his advanced age. However, he has struggled for form this season, managing only four goals in 12 league matches, and was dropped from the starting line-up in this weekend's victory against West Ham.
The steepness of Salah's decline has come as a surprise, especially given the level he attained last term. However, Yakubu, who played in the Premier League across multiple clubs, suggested that age has caught up to the winger.
What Yakubu said
In a recent lengthy interview with Sportscasting, the former Everton man lauded Salah's quality, attempted to diagnose his problems, and gave Slot advice on how to navigate the issue.
“Everyone knows that Mo Salah is a very good player and he is a legend in Liverpool,” he said. “He’s scored goals for fun, he’s won the league, and he’s been there for a decade now.
“Sometimes in football it is up and down, and Salah has never found himself in this position. But it is hard for him now, and Mo Salah would always score goals before. But in the Premier League, age can catch up to you, but he will score goals again eventually.
“And it’s up to the manager to make the decisions; that’s what he gets paid for. But Slot has already benched him before, so it’s up to him to give Salah a break or play another player in his position.
“If you think he can do the job, why not give someone else a chance? When it comes to age, the Premier League is all about running!
“It’s a very tough league, and I think this will be Mo Salah’s last season at Liverpool. He could move to the Saudi League. He’s done a lot for Liverpool, and he will always be one of the best players to ever grace the Premier League.
