‘Impossible to refuse’ - Ex-Chelsea star reveals reason for picking the Blues over Tottenham
Fresh from their UEFA Champions League victory, Chelsea were in a period of transition, aiming to integrate young talent with their seasoned veterans.
Oscar was a highly sought-after playmaker for Premier League teams and a full Brazil international, attracting significant interest from top European clubs.
However, it was Chelsea who attracted the midfielder after they presented their project to him, beating Tottenham to his signing.
What Oscar said
The ex-Chelsea star explained on The Obi One Podcast with former teammate John Obi Mikel why he turned down a move to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Oscar, the club presented him with a long-term vision that was "impossible to refuse."
Despite concerns about his physicality and suggestions that a move to Spain might be a better fit before tackling the Premier League, Oscar was determined to succeed in England.
He noted that the support from senior players and fellow Brazilians at Stamford Bridge was crucial for his adaptation.
While Chelsea ultimately won the race for his signature, Oscar confirmed that Tottenham were also strong contenders.
He revealed that then-Spurs manager André Villas-Boas personally contacted him to try and persuade him to join the North London club.
However, Oscar felt that Chelsea's project was more compelling, believing the club offered a superior platform in terms of both ambition and squad quality, which made his decision clear.
The choice paid off, as Oscar enjoyed a successful career at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League, Europa League and League Cup during his time with the Blues.
