The announcement of Nigeria's Unity Cup squad has ignited fan discontent, as supporters question the continued presence of certain players.

Supporters of Nigeria’s Super Eagles have turned their noses up at the recently released squad for the upcoming Unity Cup

The three-time African champions will face West African rivals Ghana on May 28 before taking on Russia on June 6 as part of the international football tournament.

While the fixture with the Black Stars will be held in Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, the Super Eagles’ encounter with the European nation is slated for Luzhniki Stadium, venue of the 2008 Champions League final and 2018 World Cup decider.

Nevertheless, supporters have voiced their discontent at some of the players to be involved for Nigeria.

Two standout names for criticism were Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa, whose stocks have fallen in recent years.

While Iheanacho played the second half of the season at Middlesbrough, the former Leicester City man seldom featured for LaLiga club Sevilla, for whom he made nine league appearances before moving to the Championship club in January.

The continued inclusion of Musa irks supporters, despite the forward scoring 10 times for Kano Pillars in the 2024-25 domestic season.

“Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa Again, based on what exactly… Terem Moffi is back scoring goals, why Kelechi Iheanacho again,” said X user @ waitingup4u68.

Another replied, agreeing with the aforementioned post.

“The matta Taya me (the matter tire me) See gift Orban o No call,” showing discontent at Gift Orban’s non-involvement.

In a different reply, another user commented on Iheanacho’s inclusion, with criticism directed at Eric Chelle.

“Kelechi Ihenacho, this coach isn't serious,” posted @Chinonzo_

“Why is Ihenacho still playing for the Super Eagles?” asked another user @saliu_ayomide1

What’s next for the Super Eagles?

Nigeria will return to World Cup qualifying in September, when they face Rwanda and South Africa in must-win games to save their qualifying campaign.
