'I would have signed for Atlético'- Real Madrid legend opens up on his controversial transfer move
During his playing days, the Portuguese international caused controversy following his transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid.
A beloved captain at Camp Nou, his move was seen as a betrayal by Barcelona fans, becoming one of football's most contentious transfers.
What Figo said
The Portuguese legend still considers Real and Barça the favourites for the Spanish title, although he noted, "we'll have to see how Modrić's departure affects" Los Blancos.
"Looking back on his playing days, he shared that besides those two giants, he would have considered signing for Atlético or even a Seville-based club to experience the city's derby.
"If you ask me, besides Barcelona or Real Madrid, I might have liked to sign for Atlético Madrid because of their philosophy, the stadium, the atmosphere... It was always exciting to play there, even though I was always on the opposing team.
"It would have also been special to play in a Seville derby. I won't say whether for Betis or Sevilla, because the other team's fans would kill me, but it would have been very nice with the atmosphere there," Figo admitted, via Sportal.
Regarding Real Madrid and their ambitions for the new season, the Portuguese star offered his opinion: "After a season like the last one, the club always tries to strengthen to be more stable and improve the squad where they feel it's needed. We'll also have to see the impact of Modrić's departure, as he was very important in recent years.
"Real's goal is to overcome Barça and win La Liga and the other competitions again. I don't think there was a lack of hunger for success last season. When you play for Real, you have to understand that you are competing to try and win everything."
Figo also commented on some of the new additions to La Liga: "I like Alexander-Arnold and Rashford."
On the other hand, he believes the league's most valuable player will be "one of those with higher technical quality who are consistent throughout the season and from whom we expect a great level, like Raphinha, Vinícius Júnior, Mbappé, or Julián Álvarez."
