‘I have absolutely no interest’ - Eguavoen denies plan to take over Chelle’s position
Chelle has struggled to get the Super Eagles up to speed since his arrival, with the team on the verge of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles are currently third in their group, behind Benin Republic and South Africa, who are first and second, respectively.
Following a poor start to his reign, speculation emerged that Eguavoen, along with Ladan Bosso, could take over from Chelle if he fails to secure a World Cup ticket.
Eguavoen debunks news
Eguavoen has quickly shut down the rumours, labelling them "hurtful" and "unhelpful" and expressing his frustration with the unfounded claims.
"I feel very hurt by these baseless rumours because I really have no idea where they are coming from," Eguavoen stated in an NFF release on Thursday.
"I have a very good working relationship with Coach Eric Chelle and I have absolutely no interest in taking over the squad. I am praying for him to succeed.

"This was how the same speculators created schism and disaffection between myself and Gernot Rohr and José Peseiro," he added.
"It is uncalled-for. We all need to work together to see the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup and win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations."
The qualification battle in Group C is incredibly close, with Nigeria, Benin, South Africa, Rwanda and Lesotho all still in contention for a top-two finish.
For Nigeria, a victory against Lesotho on Friday is essential to keep their hopes alive before a potentially decisive final match against group leaders Benin.
