The 34-year-old was unveiled as a Napoli player earlier this summer after widespread speculation linked him with high-profile moves to MLS or Saudi Arabia.

What De Bruyne said

However, speaking to DAZN, De Bruyne explained that his decision to move to Italy was instinctive and family-driven.

“I decided on my future a couple of days before signing for Napoli. We talked a lot and, in the end, I couldn’t wait for all the paperwork to be finalised… I felt like I had to come here,” De Bruyne said.

Despite having spent nearly a decade in England and becoming a legend at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, De Bruyne revealed that his switch to Italy came after deep personal reflection.

He added, “When I was young, I probably would never have expected to come and play in Italy… I loved England, and I was very happy. But I spoke to my wife, my children and my family and felt this was the best choice for me in every way. I made this decision based on instinct.”

At Napoli, De Bruyne now plays under fiery tactician Antonio Conte, a manager renowned for his intensity and tactical discipline. When asked about the transition, De Bruyne acknowledged that Conte's coaching style is a departure from what he was used to at City.

“Conte is very direct and someone who demands a lot from his players. He coaches in a different way than I am used to, with a different philosophy. But I think the coach is blending his tactics with the team,” he added.

De Bruyne emphasised the importance of balance as Napoli return to Europe’s elite competition this season.

“Obviously it is ambitious but all the big clubs aim to advance both in Europe and in the league. We need to find the balance to manage both commitments, but the club is building a good squad. We have two players for each position, and this will help us keep the intensity high throughout the season," he concluded.
