History maker! 38-year-old Messi breaks new record as Inter Miami defeat New England

Lionel Messi wrote his name in MLS history with two goals in Inter Miami’s win over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium.

The Argentine’s first-half strikes made him the first player to score 2+ goals in four straight MLS regular-season games. Inter Miami, fresh off two wins after their FIFA Club World Cup loss to PSG, now aim for a third against Nashville on Sunday.

The 38-year-old was praised by head coach Javier Mascherano, who said after the game, “I always say Leo is a special player. For me, the best player that has played this sport in history.

“So, it's unbelievable because he continues doing things that, maybe many, many years ago, we could not see at this moment. But at the end, he's a special player, we are lucky to have him."

Messi's streak of scoring two goals a game began before the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup when he scored twice against CF Montréal and the Columbus Crew.

The new record is an addition to his long list of achievements for Inter Miami. He is the club's leading scorer with 58 goals.
