Lionel Messi's retirement date has been revealed by former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit.

1998 World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit has predicted that Argentina captain Lionel Messi will retire from professional football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Petit dismissed rumors of the Inter Miami forward returning to Barcelona, stating that young winger Lamine Yamal has claimed Messi’s role.

Speaking to EscapistMagazine (via GOAL), Petit said, “Lionel Messi has been linked with a loan back to Barcelona, but Lamine Yamal isn’t going to be on the bench.

"Messi could play in the No. 10, but we know that he doesn’t run, and can Barcelona control the midfield.

"There’s no way we’ll see Messi back at Barcelona. I wish him the best in getting to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and I think after that he’ll retire.”

Messi left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain years ago after the Catalan club did not offer him a new contract. Despite a tough two years in Paris, the Argentine led his country to glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the Copa America in 2024.

Messi, now with Inter Miami, remains one of the world's best players despite his advancing years, and Argentina are one of the favourites heading to the Mundial next year.
