Moisés Caicedo’s return to training has sparked optimism at Chelsea that the midfielder will be fit for the Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, despite concerns over an ankle injury.
The 25-year-old Ecuadorian took a knock late in Chelsea’s 2-0 semi-final win over Fluminense on Tuesday, causing worry for manager Enzo Maresca.
Caicedo attempted to continue playing but reported pain as the match ended. His potential absence was a major concern for Chelsea ahead of their showdown with PSG at MetLife Stadium, as Maresca relies heavily on the £115m star’s commanding presence to counter PSG’s formidable midfield trio of João Neves, Fabián Ruiz, and Vitinha.
The former Brighton midfielder is extremely durable and hasn't missed a game due to injury since the 2-1 loss to Wolves on Christmas Eve 2023.
He trained in New York on Thursday morning, increasing the likelihood that he’ll be ready to start against the European champions.
Chelsea are potentially underdogs in this game but have proven to be giant-killers, as seen in the 2021 UEFA Champions League triumph against Manchester City.
