On-loan Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford has stated what stood out about Jose Mourinho during their time together at Manchester United.
Marcus Rashford has disclosed the surprising reason behind his initial frustration with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, whose unique focus on winning ultimately provided a valuable lesson for the forward.
Mourinho's tenure at United from May 2016 to December 2018 was a period of mixed results and a return to silverware.
In his first season, the Portuguese manager guided the club to victory in the Community Shield, the EFL Cup and the Europa League, securing Champions League qualification.
The following season saw United finish second in the Premier League, their highest position since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement. However, his final season was marked by a decline in form and growing tensions, leading to his dismissal in December 2018.
Rashford discusses Mourinho’s winning mentality
Throughout Mourinho's time, Rashford was a key part of the squad. Mourinho's philosophy focused on winning above all else, which the England international initially found confusing as it differed from the academy's emphasis on a specific style of play.
Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, has since revealed that he learned to respect this winning mentality and began to reap the rewards from his coaching, which ultimately helped to shape his development as a professional.
"Yeah, they're different, but [that's] because we've had so many different managers," Rashford said to Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on the Rest is Football podcast.
"It's so hard, it's impossible for me to compare the managers, but when you're a developing player, like at a young age, you learn stuff that you've never... no one's ever taught you that before.
"So like up until Jose, I'd never had a manager that was so fixated on winning before. Van Gaal wasn't fixated on winning... he was fixated on winning, but he wanted to play a beautiful style of football. Jose don't care. Do you know what I mean?
"As long as you win, of course, if you could choose, he'd want you to play well. But if you win, you win. You move on to the next game.
"But because we've won and he's a manager that is just a winner, he doesn't bring up the points that you know was missing from that last game because we've won. But when we lose, he brings up the points then. But after like six months, I just learned to respect it and then I started to reap the rewards from him as a coach."
How has Rashford fared since Mourinho left Man Utd?
Rashford endured mixed results after Mourinho's departure in 2018, winning the FA Cup again in 2023-24 under Erik ten Hag's management, after coming close the previous year.
The Englishman was also part of the Man Utd group that came close to another Europa League title in the 2020-21 season.
Rashford, who has recently criticised United’s strategy since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, has since fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, leaving the Red Devils temporarily in the second half of the 2024-25 season before departing on a season-long loan to Barcelona for the 2025-26 campaign.
