Didier Drogba: The African hero before

Osimhen's arrival and subsequent performance level at Galatasaray have birthed endless plaudits and comparisons with other top strikers, especially those who plied their trade in Turkey at some point in their careers.

One such striker was Didier Drogba, who joined the Cim-Bom in 2013 at the tail end of his career, when he was already 34, and spent a season and a half at the club.

Drogba was an incredible success in Turkey, scoring 15 goals and providing 10 assists in 37 games. He won the league title, the Turkish Cup and the Turkish Super Cup.

The comparison

Given Drogba’s success at Galatasaray, the comparison with his fellow African and mentee has been unavoidable; hence, Ugur Karakullukcu’s opinion that Osimhen’s time in Turkey is superior to Drogba's is not novel.

However, Karakullukcu provided unique reasons for his submission. He claimed from his first-hand account that Drogba tended to drift out of matches, while Osimhen maintains his level of involvement for the whole game.

"There's a real Osimhen at Galatasaray. He’s a man who single-handedly wreaks havoc on everyone,” he said, per GsGazette. “He's excellent in aerial balls and duels. Jardel didn't have that much power. He was just a very good finisher.

“Osimhen isn't at his 100% yet. Even in a good match, Drogba would play well for about half an hour. Sometimes he'd disappear. Even with Galatasaray's money, there's no other player in the world who can contribute as much as Osimhen."
