A former Nigeria defender gave important career advice to Benjamin Fredrick.

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has tipped rising Nigerian defensive talent Benjamin Frederick to leave Brentford if necessary to secure regular playing time in a major top-flight league.

The 20-year-old is on the books of Brentford’s B team and is currently on loan at Dender EH in the Belgian Pro League. Sodje believes Frederick is capable of playing at a higher level, and while he hopes the youngster can break into the Brentford first team, he urged him to leave if the pathway was not clear.

What Sodje said

Fredrick has been on a steady rise in the past few months, establishing himself as a starting defender for the Super Eagles, which has triggered Captain William Troost-Ekong’s retirement

However, Eric Chelle will not be able to count on the Brentford loanee for the AFCON, as he sustained an injury in training for Dender. Sodje believes his absence will be a big blow, lauding his talent, before expressing his desire to see him play at a higher level.

“He has all the attributes to be a top defender, so I’m disappointed to see him ruled out of AFCON,” Sodje said, per Footy Africa.

“It is a big blow to him and the entire team, because he was meant to attend his first senior tournament and continue his development. But everything happens for a reason.

“Wherever he can go and get games, I think he should go. It doesn’t have to be Brentford, because he’s a talented player. If the opportunity is not there to play first-team football at Brentford or in the Premier League, he can go elsewhere.

“But hopefully he can play for Brentford in the Premier League, because it is the best league in the world. He’s a good player, and I know him very well.”
