FIFA has approved Torunarigha’s decision to switch his international allegiance from Germany to Nigeria.

The Super Eagles have received a massive boost ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations after FIFA approved Jordan Torunarigha’s request to switch international allegiance to Nigeria.

Torunarigha was born in Germany and has represented Die Mannschaft at all youth levels from U-15 to U-21, but he remained eligible to play for Nigeria through his parents.

Torunarigha has not played for Germany’s senior team, meaning he is allowed to switch international allegiance.

The 26-year-old’s request has now been approved by the World Football governing body (FIFA), and he is now free to play for Nigeria.

According to a source, who revealed to Pulse Sports, Nigeria's quest to change the Nationality of Torunarigha for the Super Eagles has been approved.

The decision of FIFA's Single Judge of the Players' Status Chamber regarding former German Youth Player Jordan Torunarigha, who is eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents, has been approved.

The request made by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has now been accepted by FIFA, and Jordan Torunarigha is now eligible to represent the Super Eagles with immediate effect. His father, Ojokojo Torunarigha, is a former Nigeria international.

Torunarigha boost for Nigeria

Tourunarigha’s switch is a big boost for Nigeria ahead of next year’s AFCON in Ivory Coast. The former Hertha Berlin defender plays as a centre-back and can also fill in as a left-back.

Although the Super Eagles have the likes of Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Kevin Akpoguma and William Troost-Ekong in that position, Torunarigha is expected to provide more competition.

The 26-year-old currently plays for Gent in Belgium after joining the side from Hertha Berlin last summer.

Before his move to Gent, Torunarigha had spent all his professional career with Hertha. The 26-year-old has featured in Gent’s first two league games of the season.

Nonetheless, it remains to be seen if Jose Peseiro will call him up for Nigeria’s AFCON qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe in September.
