Super Falcons' defeat against England will be extra painful for the players who will now miss out on a huge financial benefit
After suffering defeat against England in the 2023 Women’s World Cup quarterfinal round of 16, Nigeria’s Super Falcons have missed out on a huge payday that would have seen each player receive up to $30,000 on top of what they have already amassed.
Super Falcons miss out on ₦23 million bonus
So far, the Super Falcons have been guaranteed $60,000 in prize money after overcoming great odds to progress to the second round of the World Cup.
They beat hosts Australia and claimed two draws against Canada and Ireland in the Group stages to reach the round of 16 and double their initial $30,000 bonus, earned by qualifying for the World Cup.
They would have added another $30,000 to their earnings if they beat England, bringing the total to $90,000 per player, but the quarterfinals proved a step too far for the spirited Super Falcons.

Two penalty misses by Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie condemned Nigeria to defeat against England in a tie where the Super Falcons matched their illustrious opponents. stride for stride, throughout 120 minutes.

Despite an overall impressive performance by the Super Falcons and England losing a player to a red card late in normal time, the Lionesses dug deep to triumph on penalties and will be the ones to receive at least $90,000 per player after reaching the quarterfinals.
The Lionesses will be aiming for far more than just a place in the quarterfinals and are considered the favourites to win the World Cup, having already conquered Europe last summer.
If they are able to go all the way and lift the trophy, each player on the Lionesses team will receive a guaranteed sum of up to $277,000, the largest ever on offer at a Women’s World Cup.
