Portugal beat Spain 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw to lift the UEFA Nations League trophy for the second time.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on the scoresheet as Portugal picked up their second Nations League title by beating holders Spain 5-3 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw.

.Ronaldo’s 138th international goal took the final to a shoot-out, with Alvaro Morata’s miss proving costly for Spain.

Ex-Wolves man Ruben Neves struck the winning spot kick to deliver the trophy for Roberto Martinez' men, sending the fans into celebration and captain Ronaldo into tears.

Spain appeared on course for yet another trophy, following last year’s European Championship triumph, as Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring in the 21st minute.

Their lead did not last long, however, as Portugal's energetic full-back Nuno Mendes slotted home the equaliser. Spain restored their advantage before half-time through Mikel Oyarzabal.

Lamine Yamal was quiet but Ronaldo, the other superstar on the pitch, took his chance to level things before going off injured.

In the end, Alvaro Morata's miss proved costly, and Portugal celebrated another trophy.
