In the 2005 edition, the Flying Eagles had come close to winning the U20 World Cup, however, a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina lifted the trophy in Utrecht, instead.

Following the completion of the group stages of the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles now know their opponents ahead of next week's round of 16 stages.

The first round of the knockout stages will see the Flying Eagles have a huge mountain to soar over as they have been paired to face host nation Argentina, next Wednesday.

Flying Eagles qualify as best loser

Despite leading Group D with six points after two group-stage matches, the Flying Eagles were condemned to a third-place finish after they lost 2-0 to Brazil on Friday.

As is customary with the 24-team competition, four of the six third-placed teams are to be matched with the winners of groups A, B, C, and D.

Hence, Nigeria will face Group A winners Argentina, who finished from their group with three wins, all nine points, and a goal difference of +9.

A tough opponent for the Flying Eagles

At the U-20 level, Argentina remains the most successful nation, winning the tournament six times, with the most recent coming in 2007.

In the 2005 edition, the Flying Eagles had come close to winning the U20 World Cup, however, a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina lifted the trophy in Utrecht.

Coach Ladan Bosso will hope the Flying Eagles are not handed another U-20 FIFA World Cup disappointment by Argentina

At the 2023 event, Argentina have proven to be one of the most lethal teams, scoring 10 goals in three games (alongside Brazil), in comparison to the Flying Eagles' four.

Both sides will meet at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario in San Juan on Wednesday, with the tie kicking off by 10 pm Nigerian time.
