Chelsea rally from behind, romping Betis to win first-ever Conference League title
Games like the Conference League final between Real Betis and Chelsea are why the phrase "a game of two halves was coined,' as the Blues swarmed their Spanish opposition in the second half to win 4-1 after having gone behind early in the contest.
Abde Ezzalzouli gave the Heliopolitans the lead, and Betis threatened to run away with it early on. However, Chelsea steadied themselves, and although they initially struggled in the final third, Cole Palmer grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, and led his side to a famous victory.
key match details
Betis exuded confidence in the opening stages, their positivity paying off in the ninth minute when Abde’s precise weak-foot finish from Isco's clever pass sent the Spanish side ahead.
The momentum continued in Betis's favour, with Marc Bartra's beautifully curled shot narrowly cleared by Filip Jorgensen. Despite squandering several promising chances, including a glaring opportunity for Johnny Cardoso, Manuel Pellegrini's team maintained their lead at halftime.
Enzo Maresca introduced Reece James in the second half, and the improvement was noticeable. They eventually got themselves on the scoresheet when Cole Palmer carried the ball through a fifth of the pitch before lobbing the ball into the box for Enzo Fernandez to head past Adrian.
Palmer continued his brilliant individual performance to set up Nicolas Jackson for a simple tap-in, leaving Betis reeling.
The decisive blow came in the 83rd minute when a delightful combination between Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jadon Sancho allowed the latter to unleash a stunning strike into the top corner. Chelsea sealed their victory with Moises Caicedo's deflected effort in stoppage time, capping off a convincing 4-1 win.
