Thomas Partey: A timeline of allegations and Arsenal’s silence
The formal charges bring to an end a period of intense speculation that began over three years ago.
As reported in detail by Pulse Sports, rumours of a Premier League footballer being investigated for rape first surfaced in July 2022.
Due to legal restrictions, Thomas Partey was not publicly named at the time, but his name was widely circulated on social media, leading to a strange situation where fans in stadiums would taunt him while media outlets were unable to comment.
This investigation, which commenced in February 2022, was a lengthy and complex process.
The Metropolitan Police's work led to a file of evidence being sent to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in December 2024.
The CPS's decision to charge Partey in July 2025 came after they concluded there was "a realistic possibility of conviction."
A statement read: “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police Service to charge a man after a file of evidence was submitted by detectives.
“The Met has issued a charge and requisition to Thomas Partey, 32 (13/06/1992), of Hertfordshire, in connection with the following offences: Five counts of rape, One count of sexual assault,” a statement read on Friday, July 4.
The five rape charges relate to two different women. The sexual assault charge relates to a third woman.
Throughout this period, Partey continued to play for Arsenal, a decision that has now come under renewed scrutiny.
Arsenal’s silence EXPLAINED
The Telegraph reported allegations against Thomas Partey first reached Arsenal, the Football Association and even the Premier League as early as September 2021.
However, no formal investigation was launched.
The FA reportedly concluded that the incidents “fell outside its safeguarding responsibility for adults and minors ‘at risk’ in the sport.”
This surprising decision meant that neither Arsenal nor the authorities pursued the matter further, despite what The Telegraph describes as “definitive evidence” being available back then.
And in July, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta defended the club’s decision to keep fielding Partey.
Arteta insisted the club "followed proper procedures 100%" despite criticism following revelations that complaints against Thomas Partey existed almost a year before his first arrest in 2022.
Speaking ahead of the club's pre-season tour of Asia, Arteta said he could not comment on the "very complicated" legal situation, but stressed that the club had acted correctly, as Sportal.
When asked if he believed Arsenal followed the correct procedures, Arteta replied: "One hundred percent."
What next for Partey?
The timing of the charges could not have been more difficult for Partey.
A free agent since his Arsenal contract expired at the end of June, he is reportedly preparing to join Spanish side Villarreal on a one-year deal with a further 12-month extension option.
