Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has joined the Nigerian Super Eagles as a late replacement for Maduka Okoye.

NPFL outfit Bendel Insurance is in a celebratory mood after goalkeeper Amas Obasogie was called up to the Super Eagles for the first time.

Obasogie’s maiden national call arrived late on Monday as a replacement for Udinese shot-stopper, Maduka Okoye, who will now miss Nigeria’s all-important FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

The 23-year-old has been in superb form for the Benin Arsenal in the 2023/24 Football League season.

He has kept six clean sheets in seven matches this season in the NPFL, helping Bendel Insurance concede just a single goal this campaign.

Regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in the country, the talented stopper played a crucial role as Insurance qualified for the CAFCC and lifted the Federation Cup in their first season after promotion from the NNL.

Obasogie’s maiden invitation means there will be two goalkeepers from the NPFL in the Super Eagles squad, with Ojo Olorunleke of Enyimba the other goalkeeper.

“Finding a new Perch is a reliable BIRD, confident between the sticks, tested and trusted,” the club posted.

“Congratulations, AMAS "LEWINSKY" OBASOGIE Obasogie1 on your invitation to the SuperEagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. All the best in the CAMP,” the club added in their statement.

The Benin bird is expected to join Francis Uzoho and Ojo to fight for who will start in goal when Nigeria kicks off the road to USA 2026 on Thursday.

Obasogie is expected to join his new teammates in camp on Tuesday in the beautiful city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Nigeria Super Eagles will host Lesotho in Uyo on Thursday in the first of their double-header before taking on Zimbabwe in Rwanda three days later.
