The Magpies deepened West Ham’s relegation fears and now there is a legitimate need for the board to act fast if the Hammers’ season is to be salvaged.

West Ham are only out of the bottom three on goal difference and the hierarchy now face a huge decision over whether to sack Moyes before the crucial away game at Fulham on Saturday.

Moyes pleads for time to save job

“As manager, you always have to front up,” Moyes said.

“I’m a big boy, I’ve left jobs at other times in the past and if that happens I’ll have to go with that. But I really like my job here, I’ve enjoyed my time here greatly, and I really hope we’ve got a couple of big days ahead in the future.”

Despite the fact that 12 managers have been sacked in the Premier League this season, Moyes remains confident that West Ham's board will support him.

“I’ve got no doubt they are behind me,” he said.

“I’m confident in the way they work and what they think, but if you’re a manager and you lose badly like I did tonight, you’re always in jeopardy and I understand that.”

Big picture for West Ham

West Ham paid the price for a shambolic defensive display and thoroughly deserved to lose.

Callum Wilson and Joelinton both grabbed two goals and Alexander Isak came off the bench to score as the Magpies continued their push for Champions League qualification.

West Ham travel to Fulham next in what has now become a must-win game. It is hard to tell if Moyes will still be manager by the weekend but one thing is clear, West Ham are tethering very close to the edge and time is running out.
