In 2030, the FIFA World Cup will mark its 100th year of existence having been launched by the world's football governing body FIFA, in Uruguay in 1930.

Since then 16 other countries have gone on to host the World Cup, with Qatar, being the most recent in 2022.

Of the 22 editions held since 1930, only eight national teams: Brazil (5) Germany, Italy (4), Argentina (3), France, Uruguay (2), England and Spain (1) have won titles despite a total of 80 teams competing, so far.

One of many feelings of pride that come with a FIFA World Cup, hosting the tournament is one.

Ahead of the 2030 showpiece, many countries have already signified interest to host or co-host the global tournament.

In 2002, the Korea Republic and Japan marked a first in the World as the FIFA World Cup was concurrently held in two countries. It was also the first World Cup on Asian soil.

In 2010, the World Cup came to Africa for the first time as South Africa was home to football's biggest tournament for one month.

The 2026 edition will be another first as the trio of the United States, Canada and Mexico will host the second-ever co-hosted World Cup, but first in three countries.
