Nigeria's Charles Bassey signs ₦5 billion extension for four years with San Antonio Spurs.
Nigerian basketball player Charles Bassey has signed an extension with the NBA franchise the San Antonio Spurs.
The 22-year-old Bassey signed a four-year contract that will keep him with the Spurs until 2027.
The new contract signed by Bassey is a $10.2 million deal, that includes a strong guarantee of $5.2 million.
The Spurs confirmed the deal with a statement that said, "The San Antonio Spurs today announced that the team has converted the two-way contract of center Charles Bassey to a standard NBA contract."
Bassey took to his official Twitter account to also celebrate the deal with a message 'Home' as he will now continue his development with the Spurs for the next four years.
Bassey's journey in the NBA
Bassey was selected by NBA Eastern Conference giants the Philadelphia 76ers with the 53rd pick in the second round of the 2021 NBA draft.
After one season he was waived by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2022 and proceeded to work out for several franchises as a free agent.
Bassey was impressive at the Summer League and earned an opportunity with the G League outfit the Austin Spurs.
He signed a two-way contract with the Spurs in October and featured in 14 total games for their G League side,
He averaged 23.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 1.86 blocks in 29.8 minutes for the Austin Spurs which earned him more opportunities with the main franchise.
In 25 games with San Antonio this season, Bassey is averaging 4.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 13.6 minutes.
His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed as Bassey was named to the NBA G League Next Up Game at All-Star Weekend.
He will return to action after the NBA All-Star weekend when the Spurs take on western conference rivals the Dallas Mavericks in a Texas derby scheduled for Friday, February 24, 2023.
