Coach Bob Kersee has called on all hands on deck to promote track and field, following the abrupt conclusion of the Grand Slam Track 2025 season.

Legendary coach Bob Kersee has expressed his disappointment with the cancellation of the Grand Slam Track (GST) League and has called for leaders who will commit to sustainable investment in Track and Field.

The iconic coach who currently trains world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, penned a note on his Instagram story, asking for athletes (past and present), coaches, athletic brands, and corporate sponsors to step up in promoting the sport.

The GST league was set to hold its last meet in Los Angeles (June 28-29) before it was abruptly canceled and commissioner Michael Johnson announced the sudden conclusion of the 2025 season.

“The decision to conclude the inaugural Grand Slam Track™ season is not taken lightly, but one rooted in a belief that we have successfully achieved the objectives we set out to in this pilot season, and the importance of looking towards 2026 and beyond,” said Johnson in the press release.

Having had three successful Slams in Kingston, Jamaica; Miami, Florida; and Philadelphia, fans and athletes were looking forward to the LA meet, which was supposed to cap off an outstanding string of performances in its first season.

Johnson's statement also gave details on why the sudden conclusion was due to several factors considered, especially in consideration of its long-term stability as the world’s premier professional track league.

"The global economic landscape has shifted dramatically in the past year, and this business decision has been made to ensure our long-term stability as the world’s premier track league. Our attention is now on 2026, with our eyes set on continuing to deliver the best-in-class storytelling, content, and competition that we have become known for in our debut year,” continued Johnson. “We are in conversations with potential host cities - many of whom have already thrown their names in the hat - to build out an exciting calendar of events for our fans across the globe. We are committed to calling Los Angeles home, and look forward to hosting a Slam in LA as part of the 2026 season.”

Several Olympic and world champions, including Kersee's star athlete McLaughlin-Levrone, signed up for the inaugural season of the GST League, as Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Kenny Bednarek won Racers of the Year, having claimed three-straight Slam titles each.
