Chelle led Nigeria to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Morocco. Although the team did not meet the federation’s initial objective of reaching the final, the NFF appears satisfied with the overall performance and is prepared to maintain stability within the coaching setup.

What Gusau said

Addressing speculation surrounding Chelle’s future, Gusau made it clear that the coach remained under contract and focused on his assignment.

“We still have a one-year contract with Eric, so any interest from others will have to wait until his contract expires,” Gusau told the Super Eagles media team.

He added, “We don’t want distractions because we know he enjoys working with Nigeria.”

The NFF president emphasised that Chelle’s ambitions align closely with the federation’s long-term plans, noting that success at major tournaments is the driving force behind the coach’s commitment.

“It’s not always about money or offers from elsewhere. The important thing is whether a team provides the right environment and players to achieve success. Every coach dreams of winning major competitions, and Eric believes he can do that here,” Gusau added.

Gusau concluded by stressing the federation’s trust in Chelle’s vision and leadership.

“He believes in the Super Eagles project and feels he can accomplish his goals with this squad. We believe in him as well, and he remains an important part of the team’s future.”
