Super Eagles ace Victor Osimhen has reportedly threatened to quit the team and abandon camp following his on-pitch tiff with his teammates, during the AFCON round-of-16 clash against Mozambique.

Eric Chelle's side made light work of the Mambas, beating them 4–0, the biggest score margin from any team in the competition, to advance into the quarter-final.

However, the post-match celebrations were overshadowed by an incident during the game, in which Osimhen got into a shouting bout with his teammates, before asking to be subbed off.

According to Arise News, his furore did not subside after the final whistle, as he turned in his accreditation and threatened to quit the team. This was after clips showed him snubbing the team celebration and heading early into the dressing room.

Osimhen vs Lookman

The argument between the two CAF POTY winners ensued when a frustrated Osimhen berated his teammates for failing to play him through on goal when the team had a 3-0 lead, as they opted to attempt shots of their own.

Asked about the incident, Lookman played it down, insisting that friction was an element of the sport and that Osimhen was his brother. He took it a step further, sharing a picture in which he was celebrating a goal with the Galatasaray ace, and captioned it with, “Together Always.”

Osimhen has not made any such gesture, nor have there been reports that he apologised to the team. Arise News’s report suggests he is still miffed; however, there is no official confirmation that he has left camp.

Before the ill-advised bust-up, the duo were well in sync. Osimhen was on a hat-trick after his strike partners, Lookman and Akor Adams, had assisted him for a brace.

The Super Eagles have been the most rampant side in the competition, fuelled by the potency of their superstars: Lookman (7G/A) and Osimhen (4G/A). The duo are also on course to break records held by Rashidi Yekini; Osimhen needs four more to eclipse the 1994 World Cup hero and become Nigeria’s all-time top scorer, and Lookman needs two more to become the Super Eagles' most prolific player in AFCON knockout games (excluding third-place playoffs).
