Nigeria can host AFCON — Asisat Oshoala laments Morocco's power, provides solution

Nigerian women's national team star Asisat Oshoala said that there is a pro-Morocco bias within AFCON.

Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala has expressed frustration over Morocco’s positioning in African football, as she believes they are enjoying undue influence and special privileges.

The Super Eagles were beaten by the Atlas Lions in the semi-final of AFCON 2025 at Complexe Sportif Moulay Abdellah stadium via penalty shootouts. While the Super Eagles failed to reach their best level, they were handicapped by dodgy officiating from Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea.

Hence, Oshoala, who warned before the match that Morocco could employ underhanded means to guarantee victory against Nigeria, raised serious concerns about the administration of African football.

What Oshoala said

Since 2023, Morocco has hosted the U-23 AFCON, the U-17 AFCON, two CAF Awards and the ongoing African Cup of Nations. After Moroccan players won CAF’s men's and women’s players of the year for 2025, fans questioned the credibility, especially after Ghislaine Chebbak beat players with superior achievements to the award, including Oshoala’s teammates Esther Okoronkwo and Rasheedat Ajobade.

Oshoala echoed similar sentiments in a recent tweet, which came after the Super Eagles’ controversial exit, suggesting that CAF has been biased towards the North Africans. “The big question here is when will this whole CA compensation to Morocco end,” she tweeted.

“Awards, tournaments and all… It’s getting boring now. We need other countries to step up. Everything concerning African football happens in Morocco; feels like that’s the new HQ.”

Oshoala wants Super Eagles to host the World Cup

The Al Hilal star believes a solution against Morocco’s dominance is for other African countries to step up, specifically naming Nigeria and its Western African neighbours as possible AFCON hosts.

“We can co-host with our neighbours if we are serious. Cameroon, Ghana, Benin, and Togo are all next door… you can’t tell me two of these 5 neighbouring countries can’t co-host AFCON.”
