Real Madrid star Brahim Díaz delivered an emotional apology to Moroccan fans after missing a decisive penalty in Morocco’s AFCON final defeat to Senegal.

Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz has issued an emotional public apology to Moroccan supporters following Morocco’s painful defeat to Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Atlas Lions fell short of securing their first-ever AFCON title after Díaz missed an important penalty in the closing moments of regulation time.

Senegal went on to capitalise in extra time, sealing victory and leaving Morocco once again agonisingly close to continental glory.

What Diaz said

In a deeply personal statement shared across his social media platforms on Monday, the 26-year-old midfielder did not shy away from accountability.

“My soul hurts. I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you have given me, to every message, to every sign of support that made me feel that I was not alone,” Díaz wrote.

“Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility and I apologise with all my heart.”

The post was accompanied by the hashtag #DimaMaghrib (Always Morocco) and the national team’s lion emoji.

Díaz admitted that the psychological impact of the defeat would be difficult to overcome, describing the moment as a wound that “does not heal easily.”

However, he emphasised his determination to push forward, not for personal redemption, but for the supporters who stood by him throughout the tournament.

“It will be difficult for me to recover, but I will try. Not for me, but for all those who believed in me and for all those who suffered with me,” he added.
