AFCON 2025: ‘They lied to us’ - Fan questions CAF over the usage of laser lights

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has come under criticism following the use of laser lights during the opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The opening fixture, played between host nation Morocco and Comoros, was expected to set the tone for a well-organized tournament.

However, attention quickly shifted from the football action to the stands after laser lights were visibly used inside the stadium.

Ahead of AFCON 2025, CAF had clearly stated that laser lights and other prohibited items would not be allowed into stadiums during the competition.

The decision was widely praised by fans, as laser lights are often considered distracting and unsporting.

However, the appearance of laser lights during the opening game raised questions about enforcement and stadium security.

Reacting to the incident, a football fan took to X formerly Twitter to express frustration with CAF’s handling of the situation.

He wrote, “Thought CAF said these things are banned from this AFCON edition? They either lied, or were unable to secure the stadium. This clearly reveals how incompetent they are…”

As AFCON 2025 continues, all eyes will be on CAF to see whether such issues are addressed promptly to maintain the credibility and professionalism of Africa’s biggest football tournament.
